The Cooling System Mess-Up That Created the Slushie Machine

How a Dairy Queen mishap turned into a Happy Accident

Sometimes, the best ideas come from things not working properly.

Back in the 1950s, Omar Knedlik owned a Dairy Queen. One day, his soda machine broke down. With no way to keep drinks cold, he started storing bottles of soda in the freezer.

Customers loved it.

The half-frozen, slushy soda was a hit, and people kept asking for more. So Omar, an accidental innovator, wondered: What if I could turn this into an actual product?

From Broken Machine to Big Idea

Omar got to work. He modified an old car air conditioning unit, tweaking it until he had a machine that could freeze and churn soda into a slush-like consistency.

It wasn’t fancy, but it worked.

By the late 1950s, he had patented the idea, and in 1960, the first “ICEE” machines started rolling out to stores. A decade later, 7-Eleven licensed the technology, rebranding it as the Slurpee—one of the most iconic frozen drinks of all time.

Now? A typical Dairy Queen franchise generates approximately $1.34 million in annual revenue off their Slushies.

And 7-Eleven makes an estimated $300 million per year from Slurpee sales. Wow!

All from a Happy Accident.

What This Means for You

Omar wasn’t trying to invent anything. He was just solving a problem. His success wasn’t about some perfect business plan—it was about paying attention to what worked, even by accident.
